Southwest LRT Maps: Locally Preferred Alternative & DEIS Routes

The Alternatives Analysis phase of project development identifies and evaluates potential alternatives for the purpose of selecting a Locally Preferred Alternative.  The Southwest Transitway Alternatives Analysis began in 2007 with evaluation of several route and mode options.  In 2008 the Southwest Policy Advisory Committee reviewed the results of the Alternatives Analysis, and recommended three LRT route options for further study: 1A, 3A, and 3C. The routes were chosen for further study based on transportation efficiency and the overall impact to the surrounding area.

In Fall 2008 the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) process began with a Scoping Period. The original scope of work for the DEIS included LRT 1A, 3A, and 3C.  During the scoping period, an additional route, referred to as LRT 3C 11th/12th Street subalternative, was introduced for inclusion in the DEIS.  For more information on the DEIS process, see the Project Information & Background Page.

In fall 2009, the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority recommended LRT 3A as the Southwest Transitway Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA).  On May 26, 2010 the Metropolitan Council approved the LPA selection for the Southwest Transitway by amending the regional Transportation Policy Plan (TPP) to include LRT 3A.  In 2012 the DEIS will be completed for all four alternatives: 1A, 3A, 3C (Nicollet Mall), and 3C (11th/12th Street Sub-Alternative).
